Optometry, Optical Lab Technicians Vacancies and Clinic Technician position based in Birmingham. Zest Optical recruitment are working with a brand new Ophthalmic training facility based in Birmingham to hire a full time Clinic Technician.

This role would suit an experienced Optical Lab Technician, Glazing Technician or Field Service Engineer looking to be part of an exciting new project.

The facility will host optical examinations and includes rooms divided by partition walls, ideal for dispensing practical exam sections, with the potential to be opened up for conferences, seminars, training, revision and CET courses. There are also rooms for smaller meetings, a fully functional glazing lab and 10 clinical bays equipped for refraction and contact lenses.

The post holder will be responsible for managing the safe operation, set up and maintenance of the clinical equipment, thus providing the best possible service to staff, students and external patients and event clients. He/she will be expected to play a proactive role in student and staff support and be adaptable and flexible to meet the changing needs of this academic, student and event environment based in Birmingham. 

General duties;

  • Liaise with and supervise the work of external contractors for maintenance of specialised equipment including evaluating malfunctioning equipment, identifying cost effective repairs or replacement options and sourcing supplies or replacements as required. This includes the knowledge for requirements for PAT testing for the NHS contract and calibration of specialised equipment as set by the GOC and updating these certificates on an annual basis.
  • Arrange the set-up, maintenance and clearing of equipment used in clinics and external courses for practical exams in OSCE style, for example for the College of Optometrists, providing support to the academics and students.
  • Operational management of all clinics, including general upkeep and tidiness, arranging the servicing of equipment and removal of clinical waste according to the relevant regulatory frameworks.
  • Provision of training and practical supervision on the use of the clinic equipment and advice on technique and use of specialist apparatus.
  • Assist and provide cover for centre staff as and when required to liaise with external contracts and assist in the smooth running of any events held at the venue.
  • Train students and academics as well as practical supervision on the use of the clinic equipment and advice on technique and use of specialist apparatus
  • Maintain register of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH).
  • Ensuring that clinical waste and materials are disposed of correctly as per GOC and NHS guidelines and our clinic protocol.
  • Perform Health and Safety reports for practical classes.
  • Organise invoicing for payments and managing the set budget for all consumables accordingly.
  • Manage and review efficient office systems to support forward planning of events
  • Use a variety of software packages to produce correspondence, documents, spreadsheets and databases.

Requirements

  • Experience of working as a technician in a high street Optician or an optical instrumentation engineer is desirable.
  • A qualification related to or in the field of optical glazing or instrumentation would be desirable.
  • A basic qualification in Health and Safety or Risk Management is desirable
  • Experience of being responsibility for Health and Safety matters in a lab or clinic environment is desirable
  • Have an understanding of NHS and GOC guideline competencies
  • Able to demonstrate experience in multi-tasking whilst working in a supportive role. This may have been gained in an optical or clinical work environment.
  • Excellent technical skills and attention to detail.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems including Microsoft Office packages, in particular the management of on-line diaries and the manipulation of database information.
  • Excellent organisational skills including the ability to plan, prioritise and manage own workload.
  • Able to demonstrate commitment to a high standard of customer service.
  • Proven team working skills.

Salary and Benefits

  • Basic salary up to £21,000
  • Working 35 hours a week
  • Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm
  • Full support to continue studies for SMC Tech or ABDO
  • Up to 10% pension contribution
